Treatment Steps

Every treatment starts with a first meeting. We take time to discuss your situation with you and to inform you of the various treatment options. Together, we will set achievable goals tailored to your personal needs.

1. Deciding together

In a first meeting, we will determine what difficulties you are experiencing with which substances and/or behavioural addictions and establish what you would like to change. In this assessment, we will not just focus on dependencies, but include any psychological distress, social problems and physical ailments. We will then decide together which issues are to be addressed. By providing extensive information on treatment and support options, we will help you choose the right solution for you.

2. Establish goals and minimise risks

On this basis, we work with you to develop realistic goals that meet your needs and correspond with your current situation. If substances are the problem, we will decide together if the objective is to consume less or to achieve a temporary or permanent abstinence. These goals can be redefined and adjusted during the course of treatment. We will also look at means to reduce risks and improve your health and quality of life. If physical examinations are necessary, we will carry them out. We also have a flexible approach when behavioural addiction is an issue and will proceed according to your personal needs, wishes and possibilities.

3. Individually tailored treatment plan

Treatment will be individually tailored to your needs by our therapists. The basis for this will be a careful analysis of your situation, which, in addition to any dependencies, will take into account your physical and mental condition, your social environment and your personal background. If required, we provide GP and social care services in addition to therapy. The number of meetings required depends on the goal of your treatment. At the beginning, weekly meetings are the norm. As treatment progresses, they will be reduced to once every two, three or four weeks. If desired, short consultations can take place daily at the start of an outpatient therapy treatment.

4. Aftercare – we continue to be there for you

We are here for you even after treatment ends. It can be hard not to fall back on old habits, especially under pressure and in stressful situations. You can get in touch again at any time, should problems arise.

Methodology

In our psychiatric and psychotherapeutic treatments, we use internationally recognised methods, such as motivational interviewing. The therapist acts in an advisory capacity and provides the facts you need to know whilst guiding you with empathy towards your own goals. We respect your autonomy and accept what you decide at all times. During treatment, strategies are developed to help you cope in everyday life. We place particular emphasis on dealing with risk situations – and hand you the tools to cope well even if you relapse.

Many of our patients keep a consumption diary, in which they record their daily substance use. To take stock in this way also works well for behavioural addictions. It can serve as a prop to adhere to one’s goals. Arud has developed a free app to support this.
